Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation was unprepared to handle the devastation that the thunderstorm unleashed on the city on Tuesday, even though it gets a daily weather report from the Indian Meteorological Department which had issues a thunderstorm alert.

Helplines were down and the 100 call centre was flooded with calls. Areas that experience water logging every year have still not been attended to. Many stranded citizens tweeted directly to Municipal Minister K.T. Rama, who was quick to respond.

B. Bhavana said she needed immediate help as some people were stranded under the Begumpet flyover near Varun Towers. Narsaya reported people being stuck in a locked car near Bachapan play school at Balkampet. The car could not move because of the gushing water.

Traffic came to a halt at Banjara Hills road number 1 due to fallen trees and electric wires. An electric wire caught fire at Jubilee Hills, opposite the Reliance show room.
