Five Tamil Nadu boys in top 100 in JEE (Advanced)

Chennai: Five students from Tamil Nadu have secured ranks among the top 100 in the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), the results of which were declared on Sunday. Chennai student P.Girinath with 285 out of 360 marks is the topper from the state with the 51st all India rank.
Of 1.55 lakh students who appeared for the exam, 18,138 candidates have qualified in the exam, IIT Kanpur, organising institute for JEE (Advanced), announced. The number of qualified candidates got reduced from over 26,000 last year to 18,000 this year. The total available seats at IITs is 11,279 this year.
Pranav Goyal from Panchkula topped the exam with 337 marks out of 360. Meenal Parakh from Kota top ranked among the girl candidates with 318 marks out of 360.
Tamil Nadu topper P.Girinath said, “After the exam, I had doubts whether I could get into top 100. Following the release of answer keys, my teachers said I could get a rank within top 100,” Girinath told this paper.
“I started my JEE coaching when I was studying in the seventh standard. But, after 9th standard only I devoted more time to prepare for the entrance exam,” the candidate from FIIT-JEE said.

He had scored 304 out of 360 marks in JEE exam. When asked about the reduction in marks, he said, “The numerical section had a new format this year and it was difficult.”His father S.Palani is working at Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment in Avadi and his mother Gomathi is a homemaker.
Another topper R.Raghu Raman scored 284 out of 360 in the exams securing all India 56th rank. He said he would like to join either IIT Bombay or IIT Madras. He had been attending JEE coaching for last seven years. “I took the coaching seriously after my 10th standard. The coaching was very useful,” he said.
Another topper Aniswar Srivatsa Krishnan got 67th rank with 281 marks. “I would like to join Computer Science Engineering at IIT Madras,” he said. C. Shriram got 74th rank and Andrews George Varghese got 91st rank.
Venkat Ramesh, senior manager (academic operations), FIIT JEE, Chennai said, “Due to the new pattern introduced in the numerical section, many students got lesser marks this year. But, in overall, five candidates from Tamil Nadu featured in top 100 as against only 2 candidates in last year.”
The number of qualified candidates has been reduced from 26,000 from last year to around 18,000 this year. “There are only 11,279 seats being offered at IITs this year. So, the Joint Admission Board might have taken the decision to reduce the qualified candidates,” he said.
In a press release, IIT Kanpur said, “Among the qualified candidates 2,076 are female candidates. This year the number of candidates qualified is more than 1.6 times the number of seats that are being offered.”
As per the HRD ministry's directive, 800 supernumerary seats have been created for female candidates in IITs in order to improve the gender balance. Of 11 lakh candidates who appeared for JEE (Main) 2.3 lakh students qualified for JEE (Advanced). The choice filling for IIT aspirants will begin on June 15. The seat allocation will be conducted in seven rounds.
Engg aspirants who missed CV can attend anytime: TNEA
The engineering aspirants who have missed the certificate verification on their scheduled time, can attend it anytime before the last date at their allotted TNEA Facilitation Centres (TFCs), TNEA announced on Sunday.
Over 1.59 lakh engineering aspirants have applied to online engineering counselling this year. The certificate verification for the engineering aspirants began on June 9.
As per the earlier announcement, those who could not attend the certificate verification on their scheduled time can attend only on the last day i.e. June 14. In Chennai, the CV goes on until June 17.
Now, the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions committee has relaxed the rule and allowing the candidates who had missed their CVs to attend it anytime before the last date.
The committee also urged the applicants to come with all original certificates with the photocopies for the certificate verification.
