UoH tweaks undertaking for freshers
The undertaking has also removed the earlier norm that restricted invitation to media to the campus.
Hyderabad: Three days after protests erupted in University of Hyderabad over an ‘intimidating affidavit’ for freshers, the administration released an ‘undertaking’ with fresh norms allowing students to participate in ‘peaceful protests’.
“I understand my privileges and rights and, when necessary, participate in peaceful protests/demonstrations only in designated spaces without obstructing the normal functioning of the university and its various entities,” the new undertaking says.
Mr Vinod Pavarala, university spokesperson, said, “The undertaking was prepared after deliberation by a committee. We have decided to not call it an affidavit anymore because it brings a legal angle. An undertaking is common in departments.”
He said 200 students had joined on Monday and all of them signed the undertaking.
The undertaking states that students should make use of student grievance redressal committees to ensure that problems are addressed by university officials.
The affidavit had contained a footnote that stated that in case students violate any of the provisions, the university “reserves the right to take disciplinary action against me (the student) that is deemed fit extending up to cancellation of my admission.”
The undertaking has also removed the earlier norm that restricted invitation to media to the campus.
