Chennai student climbs Mount Ladakhi

Chennai: It was a proud moment for Chennaiites when Kaviya.K.Dilip, a student of Guru Nanak College was one of the 18 girls who climbed Mount Ladakhi, known as one of the most tricky and challenging treks after 17 years.
Of the 20 girls, two people were from Tamil Nadu – one from Coimbatore and another from Chennai.
“After the selection at Delhi, we moved to Manali where there were 12 treks and physical training every alternative day. We reached our base camp at Lady Leg, which is 12,500 feet high on June 19 and went up to a height of 15,535ft to the Rape Ridge within the first week,” said Kaviya Dilip adding that the climatic conditions, which were completely different, compared to Chennai were initially difficult to adjust.
The brave girls trekked amid heavy rains, which resulted in avalanches. As the rain would drench their sleeping bags and tents, she explains that there were days when three girls slept in one sleeping bag and 18 girls fit in a single tent. The camp ended on July 2.
The peak is a snow clad peak in the Pir Panjal ranges in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh and is technically “modetately difficult” to climb as per Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF). It was closed in 2003 when two people died during the expedition.
