Hyderabad: Godavari, Krishna solve city water crisis
The Nagarjunasagar dam, the other source of drinking water, is getting inflows from Srisailam.
Hyderabad: Thanks to massive inflows into the Godavari and Krishna, there is enough water to supply to the twin cities till the next rainy season.
The Yellampalli reservoir, the main source to divert Godavari water to capital, has reached full reservoir level. Yellam-palli supplies 771 million litres of water to the city.
The Nagarjunasagar dam, the other source of drinking water, is getting inflows from Srisailam. Officials have stopped the emergency pumping of 1,252 million litres of Krishna water everyday from the Nagarjunasagar backwaters through the Akkampalli reservoir.
Once Nagarjunasagar and Akkampalli reservoirs reach the full reservoir level, officials are plan to divert an additional 200 million litres of water to the twin cities. This water will be stored in huge reservoirs.
Hyderabad Metro Water chief general manager D, Sudarshan (operation and maintenance) said that the present inflows into Krishna continues, Nagarjunasagar will reach full reservoir level within a week.
At the beginning of the monsoon season, Yellampalli and Nagarjunasagar had water only for three months. Due to a shortage in some areas, particularly on the outskirts, the officials were supplying drinking water once in three or four days. In some places the duration of supply was reduced. Officials are planning to restore water supply on alternate days.
There is no improvement in the water position in Singur, Manjeera, Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs. Mr Sudarshan said on Saturday that at 6 pm the inflows into Srisailam stood at 5,86,905 cusecs and outflow at 4,26,301 cusecs. He said at present the water storage level in Nagarjunasagar reservoir was 159.11 tmc ft against 312.05 TMC tmc ft full capacity.
The officials found about 50 million litres which were supplied through pipelines were being lost to leakage. Officials have identified 150 spots where water leakage occurs and are plugging them.
