Janardhan Poojary among 1,129 evacuated in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Former minister B. Janardhan Poojary was among the 1,129 people, including two pregnant woman, children, and the old, who were shifted to a safe place after the Netravathi and Kumaradhara rivers overflowed in Dakshina Kannada district, flooding several villages in Belthangady, Puttur and Bantwal on Saturday.

Mr Poojary, who is unwell and confined mainly to  his house, was moved by the rescue team after the floods intensified around it. Arriving at his house in the morning, the team shifted him to safety.

Meanwhile, rescue teams are searching for a man, who slipped and fell into the water while crossing a small culvert in Jidekallu, Puttur.

And as heavy rain continued in the Charmadi ghat, more rivers and rivulets overflowed, flooding villages near Charmadi and Parlani in Belthangady taluk. A portion of a bridge and an approach road were washed away in the floods, marooning the village of over 50 families in Hosamatha.

"With the bridge being washed away our village has been cut off . Two pregnant women, including one, who is scheduled to deliver tomorrow, have been shifted to the other side by rescue teams,"said a villager.

Belthangady MLA, Harish Poonja, visited all the rehabilitation centers in the taluk and heard the villagers pour out their distress. He also served food to people at the rehabilitation centre in Killur.

Bantwal MLA, Rajesh Naik too visited the flooded areas  all through Friday night and monitored the rescue operation.

Congress MLA U T Khader visited houses marooned in the floods in Ullal and helped the rescue teams shift the stranded people to safer ground in boats.
