Hyderabad: The student union election at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) on September 13 will not see any fierce contests this year as there is only one panel of students in the fray. They will contest against independent candidates. The enthusiasm among students to contest in student union election is low as only one candidate each has been nominated for positions of Vice President and Joint Secretary leaving no chance for competition.

Last year there were two student panels with different political ideologies, the Students’ Alliance for Justice and Democracy (SAJD) and Allied Students’ Action for Democracy (ASAD). They contested the election along with independent candidates resulting in a fierce battle on the campus and social media. However, this year SAJD, which mainly consists of SC, ST and OBC students, did not field candidates.

An EFLU student associated with SAJD said, “Last year the EFLU administration issued show cause notices to whoever protested. This year they made first year students sign an undertaking that they will not participate in protests. The election has now become redundant with students having no rights to protest. So we decided to boycott it.”
