Visakhapatnam: Andhra University has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Paryavarana Margadarsi Vaisakhi, a green NGO, on Saturday.
As part of the MoU, a biodiversity park would come up at Andhra University, housing rare species of flora. The park’s treasury would also include a wide variety of flora including medicinal, mosquito-repelling and groundwater-recharging plants.
The MoU was signed and exchanged between Andhra University Registrar Prof. V. Umamaheswara Rao and Vijay Nirman Company MD Dr S. Vijay Kumar in the presence of AU Vice-Chancellor Prof. G. Nageswara Rao.
Speaking on this occasion, Prof. Nageswara Rao said that some rare as well as botanically significant plant species would come up in the park.
“The Biodiversity Park would encourage organic farming, compost preparation from decomposed organic materials, etc. A seed bank would also be established with all the local seeds of the Eastern Ghats to make the seeds available for the farmers,” Prof. Nageswara Rao added.
Dr Vijay Kumar stressed the importance of recycling decomposed organic materials into compost.
“We would turn Andhra University a model for other universities. We would complete the project in about six months,” Dr Vijay Kumar added.
Rector Prof. E.A. Narayana, chief engineer Dr G. Madhava Babu and others were present.
