Clean water body leaves Kiran Bedi satisfied

As part of 104th weekend rounds on Sunday, the Lt Governor visited Kanakan eri' after intimating the departments and agencies concerned.

Puducherry: In order to ensure that changes that were talked about during her earlier visits towards better maintenance of water bodies, canals, drains and other infrastructure are carried out, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi proposes to inspect once again important sites she had visited earlier.

The Lt Governor would give information to the departments concerned prior to such visits, along with the observations made on the first visit and points on action to be implemented.

As part of 104th weekend rounds on Sunday, the Lt Governor visited ‘Kanakan eri’ after intimating the departments and agencies concerned.

The Lt Governor expressed satisfaction over the works carried out by departments, NGOs and residents association. Ms Bedi found that some of the works had been completed and some were yet to be carried out.

The Lt Governor found that the lake is still being contaminated by drain water from adjacent residential localities where fishes were found dead due to contaminated water and lack of oxygen.

As it was found that the nearby Indira Gandhi Medical College is disposing liquid medical waste into the lake, environmental engineer of pollution control board, Ramesh said that the medical college would be given direction not to pollute the lake by draining the waste into the lake.

The Lt Governor told the NGOs to work in coordination with the public works and forest department to maintain the lake. A walkway will be constructed with the help of residents association.

The police were requested to arrange for beat patrol during late evening hours to check the menace of public consumption of liquor. The residents were also asked to submit a memorandum to Oulgaret municipality to construct a public toilet in the area.

The Lt Governor said that each review visits will be documented and communicated to all concerned departments to work on the proposal to ensure that the change is sustained.
