Hashtag drive to shut up PC George
The legislator had made derogatory comments about the rape survivor nun in the Jalandhar Bishop case at a press meet.
Thiruvananthapuram: Shut up, P.C. George, say campaigners using the hashtag #VaayaMoodalCampaign that is catching up on quickly on the Internet. It asks everyone who would like to join in to send him a cellotape or a duct tape, to 'help' seal his mouth.
The legislator had made derogatory comments about the rape survivor nun in the Jalandhar Bishop case at a press meet. His comment calling the nun a prostitute had reportedly demoralised her so severely, that she shut herself in a room crying, cancelling a press meet.
Despite this, George has been announcing, publicly and proudly, that he will not apologise.
It is in such a scenario that activist and writer Aysha Mahmood with friends Athira R, Dhanya Rajendran, Anu Somarajan, Malu S and Sindhu Eldho started chatting about how to respond to this.
"We thought our first need was to get him to stop spewing so much hate and allegations on victims. He has been repeatedly doing this, using his power as MLA to make statements that affect the mental well-being of victims. Our first need was to help him shut up," says Aysha.
Theirs was a group formed at a time when an actor was bullied on social media, by another actors' fans. Aysha tagged actors Rima Kallingal and Parvathy TK to the Facebook post.
Shouldn't they push the government so that it takes legal action against George, asked Deccan Chronicle. Athira R, who deals with public policy at an multi-national company, says, "Yes, the government should take action. But as citizens, we have to tell P C George to shut up. It was amusing that despite all the rights-conscious people in Kerala, the MLA was getting away with derogatory comments every single time. As a people's representative, he should respect the voters, half of which are women. His home should be flooded with cellotape, and this should be a wake-up call."
While some hashtags mention PC Geroge in it, they have decided to use the hashtag #VaayaMoodalCampaign to call out every noted person who is disrespectful. Expect many more out-of-the box ideas, they say.
