Rains destroy cotton, soya crops in Adilabad region

ADILABAD: Unexpected rains have shattered dreams of cotton and soya farmers at many places in old Adilabad district, severely damaging their standing crops.

The farmers have demanded that the state government order a survey immediately to assess crop damage and pay compensation to them. They are particularly disappointed that rains had come at a time when their cotton plants had grown five-feet high and in many cases developed cotton bolls too.

Even the fertiliser that farmers had applied to plants got washed away in heavy rains and floodwaters. Many plants got flattened to the ground.

Most farmers, who have suffered a loss due to inundation of cotton plants, are now planning to sow Bengal gram.

Farmer Naitham Nagorao of Lokari village in Adilabad Rural mandal said his entire cotton crop over three acres has got washed away, since his land is adjacent to a rivulet that inundated his field.

Standing cotton crops got washed away to an extent of 1,200 acres in Nipani, Vadgam and Rajghad villages of Bheempur mandal in Adilabad district.
