CMBT rechristened MGR bus stand
This change came into effect from Wednesday after Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced this a week ago.
Chennai: Henceforth the big Chennai mofussil bus terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu will be called ‘Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Bus Stand’ (Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Perunthu Nilaiyam).
This change came into effect from Wednesday after Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced this a week ago. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), which maintains the bus stand, changed the name on Tuesday night with lighting. The new name was also displayed at places and platforms where government buses are lined up. A CMDA official noted that they are considering erecting a concrete arch with the new name.
It may be noted that after the Chief Minister made such announcement, the DMK and ruling AIADMK opposition traded charges against this move with DMK chief M. K Stalin strongly opposing move stating that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi laid the foundation stone for the bus stand. However, former AIADMK Mayor of Chennai Corporation, Saidai Duraisamy issued a statement that a proposal to construct was originally made during MGR regime. Later, former DMK Mayor and current MLA M Subramanian countered his statement that Duraisamy had no knowledge on the construction of bus stand.
