Visakhapatnam: Around 100 hired thugs went berserk and demolished several temporary sheds erected for construction of apartments in Kurmannapalem, near Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. on Tuesday.

Deputy commissioner of police Ananda Reddy said the incident was linked to a property dispute. "Landowner Attili Narayanaswamy inherited an extent of 9.30 acres under survey no 39/1 in 1985. He sold the property to Varahala Raju in 2011. Raju built apartments called Ocean Green and sold them the next year."

"Swamy lost two acres of land for the Raiwada Canal and hence he gave the compensation to Varahala Raju.

Varahalaraju proposed to construct another apartment complex on the remaining 1.9 acres of land. Meanwhile, realtor Subrahmanyam lured Narayana Swamy’s son, Appala Swamy, to sell the 1.9 acres of land and made him sign a GPA."

This enraged Varahalaraju. He immediately constructed a compound wall around the 1.9 acre land parcel and raised some sheds. Subrahmanyam raised a dispute and asked Varahalaraju to stop the construction. Sensing trouble, the Duvvada police summoned Varhalaraju and Subrahmanyam to the station and advised them to solve the dispute through court.

On Tuesday, Subrahmanyam took some 70 to 80 youngsters and tried to demolish the sheds. They also tried to attack the security personnel of Varahalaraju. The police rushed to the spot and took into custody all those who tried to demolish the sheds and forcibly occupied the land.

The DCP siaid,“We will not tolerate such anti-social activities. We will register cases against all those who took part in the demolition activity after receiving a complaint from Varahalaraju.’’ He denied that they were rowdy-sheeters. They were members of the 'Riffraff’ gang hired for such purposes by landlords and others when they land in such situations, he said.
