Bengaluru: In a relief to the public, banks will function on Monday and remain closed on Tuesday on account of Id-e-Milad. This was following the state government’s decision to change the holiday from Monday to Tuesday. A holiday on Monday would have meant three consecutive holidays for banks and this would have caused hardship to the public, currently reeling under severe cash crunch as most ATMs have become dysfunctional.

Curbs on old Rs 500 notes
Starting from Saturday midnight, old Rs 500 denomination notes will not be honoured by most government utility service providers, including railways, metro and government buses. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announcement, old Rs 500 notes will, however, continue to be accepted in government hospitals, government pharmacies, milk booths, LPG agencies, schools and colleges till December 15. According to the bank officials, as majority of the people have already returned their old denomination notes, there may not be any problems.

Dry ATMs
Majority of the bank ATMs in the city were running empty on Saturday due to the bank holiday.
