Kanyakumari fisher killed in Saudi waters

On being chased, the shocked fishermen began to return to shore, but the Lankan Navy personnel allegedly smashed one of the boats belonging to one Praveen and damaged it badly, they said.

Kanyakumari: A Kanyakumari fisherman was reportedly killed and two others injured in Saudi Arabian waters as a Saudi Navy vessel hit their fishing boat.  Maria Pitchai alias Anthony Pitchai of Rajakamangalamthurai in Kanyakumari district along with his brother, Sahaya Balan and Jeyaraj went for fishing for his Bahrain employer-Hussain  ahseed Ali on January 6. 

However, due to strong winds and water currents, their boat entered the Saudi Arabian waters and the Saudi Arabian Navy chased them.

As they tried to escape into Bahrain waters, the Saudi Arabian navy patrolling vessel dashed the boat in order to arrest the fishermen onboard it. Hit by the Navy vessel, the fishing boat was damaged and Maria Pitchai sustained grievous injury and died, while two others, who too were injured were arrested by the Saudi Arabian Navy personnel.
