Negligence led to woman's death: DMO

MALAPPURAM: The district medical officer has found that medical negligence and ignorance led to the death of a 23-year-old woman during delivery at the 'Sprouts International, Naturopathic Maternity Studio' at Manjeri on Tuesday.
The report submitted to the district collector said that unlicensed BNY-qualified doctors (Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yoga) were attending delivery cases and that the woman was not shown to the gynaecologist on time when she was bleeding. She died three hours after delivery. The child is in good health.
The naturopathic clinic functions inside 'Ernad hospital' in Manjeri and the gynaecologist was not alerted about the woman's condition even when she was critical. "The BNY doctor said that he had not worked in a labour room as part of the course, but only seen a functioning labour room. BNY doctors do not take care of delivery cases anywhere," said deputy DMO Dr. R. Renuka. The centre which offered naturopathic ground birthing and water birthing facilities was sealed on Wednesday after the woman's death.
The DMO report mentioned the clandestine manner in which the entire set-up has been functioning for a year and its dubious past when it was located at Venniyur near Kottakkal.
Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased woman told reporters in Malappuram that they had no complaint and that they did not believe that the death occurred due to the fault of the naturopathic centre.
