BBMP excavation damages gas pipe

An official from fire and emergency service said that it took almost two hours to control and restore the pipe.

Bengaluru: The traffic was thrown out of gear on the busy Sarjapur Road on Friday afternoon after a GAIL gas pipeline leak was reported, while the BBMP was carrying out an excavation work. The incident had sparked panic among the public and the commuters.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 11:45 am on Sarjapur Road outside the Wipro corporate office. The fire and emergency personnel, along with GAIL team, rushed to the spot to plug the leak.

The traffic was hit for almost two hours and surrounding areas were also hit.

Traffic police said that the vehicular movement was stopped for a while as a precautionary measure and was cleared as soon as the gas leak was under the control.

A senior BBMP official said they began excavation work for a drain project at around 10:30 am and an hour later a leak was reported. The GAIL team rushed to the spot and immediately stopped the flow of gas.

He said that it had not caused any damage as it was a minro leak and was immediately stopped.

Earlier in October, a similar gas leak was reported during the metro work and Mahadevapura police had registered a case against a BMRCL, based on the complaint filed by GAIL.
