Pudukkottai: The CPI (M) politburo member, Brinda Karat, said the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition front will be finalised only after the Lok Sabha elections, and it would be depend on which party wins more number of seats.

She told newsmen at Karambakkudi near Pudukkottai on Monday that post-demonetisation of high value currencies by the Modi government, more than one crore people were rendered jobless.

She came down heavily on the anti-farmers attitude of the Modi government and said 48,000 farmers across the country have committed suicide in the last few years.

Taking a dig at Modi with having visited the state four times for election campaign recently, she pointed out that the Prime Minister did not even bother to visit Tamil Nadu after the Gaja cyclone.

Later, addressing the public meeting Karat pointed out that the April 18 election to the 39 Lok Sabha elections and by-elections for the 18 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu was like the bid to “get two mangoes with one stone.”

The April 18 elections was not only for electing 40 members to the Lok Sabha from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, but also to “unseat the corrupt” AIADMK government in the state.

She recalled that during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had raised in her election campaign, “Modiyaa or Ladiyaa” theme and had bagged 37 Lok Sabha seats in her party’s favour. But now, an AIADMK minister was calling “Modi as daddy”, she said, adding, “it is a shame”.

The CPI(M)’s Pudukkottai district unit secretary Kavivarman and others handed over a sum of Rs 10  lakh as the first installment of the election fund to Karat on the occasion.
