THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP State president Kummanam Rajasekharan has demanded that  the Government should do a rethink on tuskers being used in temple festivals.  He also demanded that fireworks should be banned at temple festivals. In a television interview, Kummanam said the safety of the people was of paramount importance.

However, he added that thinking on such a ban could not be taken overnight and it was better that political parties stayed away from interfering in the decision.
Kummanam was speaking on the sidelines of Puttingal fireworks mishap, in the midst of his campaign at Vattiyoorkavu where he is a BJP candidate in the Assembly elections.

He said that the fault lay with the competition between various members of the temple festival committee and also their inefficiency in holding festivals in a proper manner.

“Peoples’ safety should be of utmost concern and there should be efforts to take care of it. Whatever policies that comes against it should be thwarted. Religious heads, priests, representatives of Hindu organizations and officials of Devaswom Board should hold talks on this issue”, said Kummanam.
