MADURAI: A 10-month-old girl baby which was kidnapped while playing outside her house at Peraiyur town near Madurai was rescued by a police team within few hours on Friday night.

The police arrested four persons including two women in connection with the case. The main accused Eswaran (22) from Sattur, is a distant relative of the baby, who watched its activities for nearly three days before kidnapping the infant on Friday afternoon.

Yogaammal (39) and her relative Naganathan (42) from Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district approached one Lakshmi at Maravapatti village near Usilampatti to help her adopt a baby.

Lakshmi, a black magician, was also popular in Usilampatti area for supplying herbal medicines to childless couples to enable them conceive. And Eswaran assists her in performing black magic, said V Gomathi, DSP Peraiyur.

Yogaammal was in desperate need of a child because she ‘lied’ to her husband that she was pregnant. She was in the family way when her husband who was working in Dubai, came home recently. But Yogaammal had a miscarriage, about which she did not tell her husband, the DSP said.

When Yogaammal promised to offer Rs one lakh for a baby, Lakshmi and Eswaran assured her to provide a baby. Since then Eswaran was visiting his relative’s Muthupalani and Satya’s house in Peraiyur. He told them he would purchase new clothes for the baby.

Noticing that the couple allowed the baby to play outside their house in the morning hours, Easwaran lured the kid’s relative with promise of chocolates and cricket bats if he brought the baby to him, said the DSP.
