Kochi: Rash driver who took a life arrested in Ernakulam

Police said that the accused had hit a scooter and sped away without stopping the car before this accident.

Kochi: Perumbavoor police on Tuesday arrested the person whose alleged rash driving claimed the life of a person and critical injuries to the daughter and son of the victim in an accident happened near Perumbavoor Monday morning. He was later released on bail.

The accused Afsal, 29, of Kavalangad in Kothamangalam had fled the scene leaving the car after the accident.

The accident happened at Marampally on Monday morning when the car in which the victims were traveling collided with a school bus after being hit from behind by the car driven by the accused. Joseph Chacko, 52, of Idukki died in the accident. His daughter Nithya Maria Joseph,25, and son Nithin Jose, 18, were critically injured and were admitted to a city hospital.

Police said that the accused had hit a scooter and sped away without stopping the car before this accident. They said that his anxiety to get away from local people who chased him from the spot probably led to the accident which claimed one life.Case was registered against the accused under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) 304A (causing death by negligence) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC.

Both the patients who were critically injured in the accident remain in the Intensive Care Unit. "A surgery was planned for the girl, but it has been postponed for the time being due to high blood pressure. The boy had sustained abdomen injuries and a leg fracture," spokesperson said.
