Govt to acquire land for expansion of airports in four major cities

Chennai: The government will acquire land for airport expansion work in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchy, transport minister M.R. Vijayabhaskar informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to the issue raised in the Assembly by Madurai (Central) legislator Dr Palanivel Thiagarajan, the minister said administrative sanction has been accorded to acquire about 617 acres land for the expansion work at Madurai airport.

“About Rs 116 crore has been set apart to compensate the land owners through the district collector,” Mr Vijayabhaskar said and added that measures to acquire lands for the expansion of the airports at Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruchy, would be expedited.

Raising the issue Palanivel Thiagarajan said if the state government failed to acquire the land for the proposed expansion of the Madurai airport and hand it over to the Airports Authority of India by 2020, the Temple City would have to forfeit the opportunity.

Won’t allow hydrocarbon project against people’s wish

Tamil Nadu will not allow any project that went against the interest of the farmers, Industries Minister M. C. Sampath informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

Replying to the Leader of the Opposition and DMK Working President M.K. Stalin, who during the Zero Hour, demanded the government to pass a resolution in the Assembly House expressing the resolve not to allow the project in the state, the minister said the government would not go against the interest of farmers.  CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami had written to the Centre urging it to drop the hydrocarbon project in the wake of intense protest by farmers, who fear that the project would jeopardise their livelihood. "The Centre has agreed to consider the request of the State," Mr Sampath said. Mr Stalin who raised the series of protests at Kadhiramangalam in Thanjavur district, claimed the Kadhiramangalam village has turned into a battle zone following protests by farmers, villager.

The state government should release all those arrested in connection with the recent violent incidents in the village and ensure normalcy returned in the areas. He also demanded that all the cases registered against the protestors should be withdrawn.
