Porur water to quench Chennai's thirst
The purification unit has been established beside the Porur lake bund on an area of 1,080 sq ft.
Chennai: The drinking water project involving a purification plant, established at a cost of Rs 1.85 crore at the Porur lake to meet the drinking water requirements of Chennaiites was inaugurated on Tuesday by municipal administration minister S.P. Velumani.
Aiming to supply about 40 lakh litres water daily for 100 days, the purification project will quench the thirst of the residents in Valasaravakkam, K.K. Nagar and Alandur.
The government has said that the water from the lake was found to be fit for consumption following quality tests conducted by the Metrowater and King’s Institute, Guindy. The purification unit has been established beside the Porur lake bund on an area of 1,080 sq ft.
The purification unit comprises two 50 hp pumps that will suck the water out of lake and channel it into a three-step filtration system that consist of 12 high pressure particulate filters bought from Israel. The purified water would be pumped into 250 mm diameter pipes and connected to the Veeranam project pipes that run 300 m away from the Porur lake-bed.
Velumani inaugurated the project along with the managing director of Chennai Metrowater, Arun Roy, in the presence of rural industries minister P. Benjamin.
