Krishnagiri: Hogenakkal folks move out of low-lying areas

Krishnagiri: The people who dwell in low lying areas in Hogenakkal of Pennagaram taluk in Dharmapuri have moved to safer places following huge floods here in the Cauvery River.

The people of Chathiram, Natramkottai, Ottamalai, Indira Nagar and Hogenakkal areas have moved out of houses to stay in their relatives place after the inflow into Hogenakkal has touched 1.20 lakh cusec on Sunday Morning.

Sources said, the inflow into the lower riparian state of Tamil Nadu has gradually increased from 1.20 lakh cusecs to 1.35 lakh cusecs when measured in the evening that day. It is expected to reach between 1.50 lakh cusecs to two lakh cusecs in the early hours of Monday.

As a preventive measure, the Dharmapuri district administration has deployed police men along the course of Cauvery at Hogenakkal. This was done to prevent the picnickers from entering the river. Coracle services were also suspended and the gate to the path to the bathing area in Hogenakkal falls will be kept closed till the situation returns to normal.

The inflow received by the lower riparian state of Tamil Nadu was because of the surplus discharge from the Kabini and KRS dams in Karnataka.

Outflow from the KRS dam in Mysuru in Karnataka was increased to 57,420 cusecs on Sunday by 491 cusecs over the previous day release.

The inflow into the dam was recorded as 18,7721 cusecs and the present water level in the dam stood at 118.75 feet, against its total height of 124.80 feet. The KRS water level witnessed an increase of 16.30 feet in height on Saturday night. As much as 1,21,000 cusecs was released from Kabini reservoir.
