BENGALURU: There is a heart that beats behind that uniform, believes the family of a 72-year-old Hermanen, an elderly woman, suffering from Alzheimer’s. On September 6, Hermanen and her pet dog lost their way at Ramamurthynagar and forgot how to get back home. The K.R. Puram police rescued the senior citizen and her dog. When her anxious family finally arrived at the station, they found Hermanen and the dog safe and sound.

Panic gripped the family when their mother, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s for many years, had not returned home. Their pet dog, who goes for walks with Hermanen, too had gone missing. The family went around the area searching for their mother. When they could not find the two even after six hours of search, the family decided to go to the police station to file a missing complaint. The family members reached the K.R. Puram police station and as they got in, they had a surprise, a big and pleasant one at that.

Their mother was seated in a chair, and policemen were fussing around her trying to make her comfortable. They had already offered her food and water, and the dog too was quite contented, chewing the biscuits offered. K.R. Puram Police Station Sub-Inspector Rangappa H told Deccan Chronicle, “We received a call around noon about an elderly woman wandering around with her dog on the streets of Ramamurthynagar. The Hoysala patrolling team was immediately rushed.”

The Hoysala team (no 266), with Woman Police Constable Jayashree, driver Mahantesh and another constable, reached the spot. Talking soothingly to Hermanen, they asked her to board the Hoysala jeep with her dog, and brought them to the police station. Mr Rangappa told his men to feed the elderly woman and to give biscuits to the dog. “We tried to get the house address from her. But she did not remember anything. We didn’t pressurise her and waited for her to become calm,” Mr Rangappa said. By 6 pm her sons came in search for her and cried seeing their mother and dog at the station. “They thanked us profusely and left with their mother.”
