Khammam: Chain snatchers are being forced to change plans and their areas of operation due to installation of CCTV cameras.

It has been observed that places that do not have CCTV cameras are now more crime-prone.

While CCTV cameras have helped make areas safer, criminals are still active and lurking in dark spots.

If one studies the recent chain snatching incidents, the targets now are women in villages going to the field or tanks to wash clothes or even taking lunch to their men folk.

In Khammam, chain snatching incidents have been reported from Mudigonda, Chintakani, Tirumayapalem, Konigerla, Khammam Rural, Bonakal, Wyra, Sattupalli, Madhira, Kallur and Nelakondapalli mandals. Over 30 chain snatching incidents have taken place in these mandals over the last three months.

It was found that the favourite time of the criminals to strike is from 5.30 am to 7.30 am, 11 am to 2 pm and 5 pm to 9 pm.

This is because the movement of people will be less during these timings. Single women, or even two women walking on the roads are often the targets of chain snatchers.

Women wearing gold chain is part of Indian culture and often, the mangalsutra is made of gold.

In Khammam, over a dozen chain snatching incidents took place in remote streets, where there was no CCTV. The police, alerted by the incidents, has asked apartments and independent houses to fix CCTV cameras to check crime.
