Srinagar: Pro-independence Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader, Muhammad Yasin Malik, on Saturday took strong exception of mainstream opposition party National Conference (NC) president and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah’s assertion that ‘independent Kashmir’ was not viable or a reality and, instead, the Centre should restore autonomy to the State.

“The people of Kashmir have not given sacrifices for so-called autonomy under which a Prime Minister (Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah) was thrown into jail for eleven years,” he said.

He accused Abdullah of “always playing non-serious and selfish politics” and said that the Kashmiris never take his words and personality seriously. He rejected the NC leader and three-time Chief Minister’s statement before media earlier during the day as “absurd and non-serious” and said that he always issues controversial statements. “But the people of Jammu (and) Kashmir are fully aware of his irresponsible character, his non-seriousness and the level to which he can stoop down for his selfish gains and because of these facts no one takes his statements seriously,” Malik said.

He also said that Abdullah and his father did politics in the name of Kashmir’s freedom for a long time. “In fact, Farooq Abdullah and his late Father has been doing politics in the name of freedom of Kashmir for a long time and it was he ( Farooq) who in 1974 from Lal Chowk (Srinagar’s historic square) floated the slogan of ‘Choen Desh Myon Desh, Kashur Desh Kashur Desh” (Your nation, my nation; Kashmiri nation, Kashmiri nation) and even participated in pro-freedom rallies in Mirpur (poK),”  Malik said in a statement here. It accused the Abdullahs of shunning the “path of freedom” and “sacrificing the interests of Kashmiris for their lust of power” and “to serve their own selfish goals”.
