Cuddalore: Defying the Supreme Court’s ban, activists of ‘Naam Tamizhar Katchi’ on Thursday conducted Jallikattu in this district two days ahead of Pongal. Cuddalore District Police arrested 28 people in connection with the event.

After the Supreme Court rejected a plea urging it to pass judgement on the sporting event before Pongal, the activists conducted jallikattu near the Thiruventhipuram Devanathaswamy Temple premises in the coastal town of Cuddalore.

Will organise sport in other districts: NMK
Curiously, Tamil television channel beamed live the visuals of the event that took place an hour after the apex court verdict, but the police arrested the organisers only after the event was over. The event seemed to have been well planned as barricades were erected around the premises and even arrangements were made to accommodate crew of television channels.

The bulls were confiscated and owners warned of strict action.  “We don't need permission to hold jallikattu since it is our Tamils cultural sport. We will organise jallikattu in other districts as well,” a Naam Tamizhar Katchi member said.
