CHENNAI: Apollo Hospitals, which treated J Jayalalithaa for 75 days in 2016, on Friday submitted 30 volumes of medical records of the late chief minister to Justice A. Arumughaswamy Commission probing her hospitalisation and death.

A team of three lawyers and four doctors from Apollo Hospitals appeared before the commission and submitted two bags full of documents and affidavits.

Sources said while one bag had original medical records, the other was a photocopy of the original ones.

“After the photocopies were verified with original documents, the original ones were handed over to the lawyers and doctors of Apollo Hospitals,” a senior official said. The sources said the hospital authorities submitted all medical documents relating to Jayalalithaa's health were submitted before the commission.

In a statement, Apollo Hospitals said at the time of hearing, the “xerox copies and originals” were compared, and it was verified that the copies of the documents were in order.

“The Hon'ble Commission took this on record officially and directed Apollo Hospitals to receive back the 30 volumes of original documents,” an official statement, adding it has provided an undertaking to produce the originals as and when called upon.

Apollo Hospitals has been saying it was ready to hand over all documents relating to Jayalalithaa's hospitalisation right from her admission on September 22, 2016 to her death on December 5, 2016. The hospital has been maintaining that it was open for any kind of scrutiny and would make available every document before government authorities.

The commission has so far summoned several top officials who were part of the Jayalalithaa administration - her powerful advisor Sheela Balakrishnan and sacked chief secretary P. Rama Mohana Rao - to examine them. A number of people have also sent documents and affidavits relating to Jayalalithaa's death to the commission.

The commission has been mandated to inquire into the “circumstances and situation leading to the hospitalisation of the late Hon'ble Chief Minister on September 22, 2016 and subsequent treatment provided till her unfortunate demise on December 5, 2016.”
