Hyderabad: Docs come to rescue of boy

Hyderabad: Doctors in a private hospital have successfully removed a two centimetre chicken bone stuck in the gullet of a 10-year-old boy from Lingampalli.  A foreign body in the airway may lead to choking and is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. If not removed in time, the choking could even lead to death.

The boy was referred to a hospital a whole two days after the bone got stuck in his gullet.

He had a temperature. When he was finally taken to the hospital, a team of doctors led by Dr Raghuram Kondala, consultant medical gastroenterologist, removed the foreign body and conducted an endoscopic clipping from the oesophagus. With stenting, the functionality of the food pipe was fully restored to ensure no immediate or future complications.  In 2019 alone there were 24 known cases of accidentally swallowing foreign bodies, claimed doctors.

Commenting on the procedure, Dr Kondala said, “Such cases must be attended to immediately, as a delay could increase the risks like food pipe perforation leading to infection, long term complications, and in some cases may even result in death.”

Parents must be extra cautious when children eat meat which may have bones, said Dr SVS Sreedhar, consultant paediatrician.
