Hyderabad: The iconic clock of the Government Boys High School at Sultan Bazaar, which figures in the list of heritage structures in the twin cities along with the ones at Secunderabad, Mahatma Gandhi Road (James Street) and Fateh Maidan, has become defunct.

This clock atop a tower was built especially for the children studying in the school, old-timers said.

According to locals, the school had big playgrounds and huge trees. Children would sit under the trees near Badi Chowdi to have lunch and return to their classes in time, following the clock.

Now. the clock tower presents a sorry picture. The school roped in outsiders to get it repaired. The clock worked for a few days and stopped again.

One of its entrances is now used as a storeroom by a government office located nearby. The clock tower figures in listed heritage sites but not the school building constructed in 1866, locals complained.
