MALAPPURAM: The recurring clashes between CPM and Muslim League workers  have affected normal life in Unniyal and Paravanna,  the coastal areas of Tirur Assembly constituency.  Two shops of Muslim League workers and the Muslim League office were burnt  in  Paravanna  early on  Thursday followed by a series of attacks in nearby Unniyal.  Earlier on Tuesday,  12 houses of  CPM men in Unniyal were attacked by  League workers.  Police forces were deployed in the area following the violence.

“Only women and children were there when the 12 homes were  attacked. The police haven’t taken any step to prevent the violence,” said   Mr P.P Vasudevan, CPM district secretary.  A few people were taken into custody but none  were arrested.

“The police have promised  strict action  against the miscreants within a week,” he said.   The clashes between Muslim League and CPM here date  back to over a decade. But the Muslim League has termed it as local or personal issues. “The Muslim League has no connection with the unrest in the region. We have only tried to eliminate the violence as the  party is for peace among the  people irrespective of parties,” said  Mr C. Muhammadali, president of Muslim League Tirur constituency.

A 20-member armed reserve police force and three patrolling teams have been deployed in the area to maintain peace, said Tirur police.
