Hyderabad: In a crucial addition to the carriageway on Sardar Patel Road, the traffic police, along with Metro Rail and GHMC , have laid a new short-distance slip road at Rasoolpura junction to ease traffic congestion being caused due to on-going works for the Metro Rail station.

Though only gravel has been put and bitumen is yet to be laid, motorists have started using the slip road, resulting in improvement of the traffic flow from Begumpet towards Secunderabad.

The new stretch that starts just after the Begumpet police station, has been laid on land allotted for a commercial complex to Metro Rail authorities. The additional stretch of carriageway joins the SP Road at the entrance of the hockey stadium at Rasoolpura junction.

Motorists are not willing to wait till GHMC lays the bitumen. “Who cares about bumpy rides when you can avoid traffic jams and save time by using the kachcha road? The Metro Rail and traffic cops should also come out with such additional stretches of road space on the other side of the SP Road, from Gowra Plaza to Function Villa,” said Mr K. Sagar Deshmukh, who travels to Panjagutta from West Marredpally daily.

Deputy commissioner of police, traffic, Mr L.S. Chauhan told this newspaper that traffic police was trying to identify every inch of additional space which could be converted into carriageways.

“The advantage with this additional carriageway is that it allows traffic cops to use a portion of the existing carriageway on Begumpet-Paradise side of the road for diverting vehicular traffic coming from Paradise to Begumpet,” he said.

Earlier during the day, a team of senior officials comprising HMR managing director N.V.S. Reddy, GHMC commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy, police commissioner M. Mahender Reddy and additional commissioner of police (traffic) Jitender inspected SP Road and the ongoing works at Rasoolpura junction.

The inspection visit was taken up following advice by municipal administration minister K.T. Rama Rao to ensure that the traffic congestion problem was eased on SP Road.
