Hyderabad: Poor toilet habits of many of the city’s male residents, who don’t think twice before unzipping and peeing in public, is creating its own set of problems.

Due to poor usage, most bio-urinals in the city have been locked up. Residents thought nothing of easing themselves at the toilets, making them unuseable for others.

Mr Lal Balu, an operator at a Sulabh toilet at Shivam Road near DD Colony, said most people relieved and eased themselves in the space behind the toilet.

“We had to clean the area surrounding the toilet every day. Recently, we fenced the space. But the people are still crossing the fence and urinating,” he said.
He said that 300 people use the Sulabh toilet per day. “Many inquire about the charge which is Rs 2 for the urinal and Rs 6 for the toilet. They don’t use the toilet and go on the road-side,” he said.

Senior advocate Akula Ramya blamed it on the poor condition of public toilets. “As per WHO norms, one toilet each should be constructed at a distance of 2-3 km. The government should utilise the funds released by the Central for the open defecation-free programme,” she said.

The city’s women were crying for toilets. “The problem of women cannot be expressed by words alone. The government should construct women’s toilets across the city,” she said.
