Kodagu pays Rs 89 crore to flood-hit people in last monsoon

Mysuru: The Kodagu district administration has deposited Rs 89.091 crore in relief money into the accounts of 44,506  people , who lost their homes and suffered other losses in the floods and landslides that accompanied the monsoon last year, according to deputy commissioner, Annies Kanmani Joy.

As much as Rs 1.370 crore has been distributed among family members of the 21 people, who died during the rain havoc, Rs 38.050 crore has been paid to 32,198 people, who lost their crops in the floods and Rs 20.920 crore to 351 others, whose crops were buried in the  landslides.

In November last year,  480 people, whose houses were damaged in the landslides and floods, were given  Rs 10,000 each towards house rent and between December 2018 and April 2019, over Rs 2 crore was distributed in house rent among 415 others, whose houses were damaged in the disaster, going by Ms Joy.

" The first instalment of Rs 2 lakh each has been given to the 54  people who decided to re-build their own houses and Rs 15.087 crore has been distrusted as relief to 4, 254 people, whose homes were damaged," she revealed

Kodagu, which received its highest rainfall in 118 years during the South West Monsoon last year  was hit by a major disaster, with landslides and floods taking 21 lives and destroying people's homes  and crops.

As many as 7594 people were rescued and housed in 51 relief centres as thousands of hectares of plantations and agricultural land were flooded, and several thousand kilometers of roads,  power cables and  mobile towers damaged.

With 829 people losing their homes, the Kodagu district administration is building 433 houses in the first phase, and hopes to build the rest in phases to follow.
