Need to know what separates hero and zero: K R Meera
Being a hero is about understanding the world, considering girls to be human beings like them, with equal opportunities and freedom.
Kochi: The recent case of sexual assault of a popular actor is another instance of lack of gender sensitisation among boys, said Sahitya Akademi Award winner, K.R.Meera on Wednesday.
“There is a difference of only one letter between hero and zero. More important than being a strong hero is to understand more about the world. We all need to become good human beings”, she said.
Speaking after inaugurating the ‘Gender Sensitisation Workshops for Boys’ being organised by Action Breaks Silence and Centre for Gandhian Studies, Alphonsa College at CMS Higher Secondary School, Ms. Meera exhorted the boys to become better human beings.
“Being a hero is about understanding the world, considering girls to be human beings like them, with equal opportunities and freedom. Thus we can end gender discrimination and create a healthy society,” she said.
Speaking on the occasion, Debi Steven, Founder and President of Action Breaks Silence said that an attack on any woman is an attack on humanity. Boys could be game-changers and sensitising boys is the need of the hour.
Dr. Alice Jose, Principal of Alphonsa College, Dr. Mereen Punnen, Consultant Psychologist, Dr. Teresa Joseph, Director, Centre for Gandhian Studies, Alphonsa College; Ms. Rosmy Kattoor, Co-ordinator, Centre for Gandhian Studies, Sneha George of the Gandhi Forum of Alphonsa College also spoke on the occasion.
