Hyderabad: Traffic violations double in six months

Hyderabad: Hyderabad traffic police have recorded more than 100 per cent increase in the number of cases of wrong-side driving and driving with improper`number plate or no registration, as mentioned in the mid-year report released by the traffic department.
However, the traffic department has also noticed a 12 per cent decrease in the number of fatal accident cases and a 10 per cent decrease in the number of deaths in the first half of the year. 135 fatalities were registered in the first half of 2019, against 150 fatalities recorded in the first half of 2018.
The department also witnessed a substantial increase in violations like triple riding, wrong-side driving, driving with improper or no number plates and the use of cellphones while driving.
While presenting the report, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Mr Anil Kumar said the department has started a massive drive against offenders. “We are undertaking a variety of measures to reduce traffic violations. For example, over the past six months, we have caught over 15,000 people driving under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
About the pending challans issued against ministers and drivers of government vehicles, he said, “We have appointed a dedicated team to identify those who have pending challans. We will intimate these offenders by phone or post and take necessary action.”
He added that traffic rules will be implemented more efficiently among the youth. “For youngsters violating traffic rules — all violations will be recorded officially, and that can affect their career.”
