Laity has no right over Church assets: George Alencherry
The cardinal also submitted that the complainant is a person closely associated with dissidents in the church.
KOCHI: The laity is not having any right over the assets of the SyroMalabar Church, according to Cardinal George Alencherry, major archbishop of the Syro Malabar Church. The archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly is having every right to sell the land under its possession and the members of the parishes are not having any right to interfere in the matter. Cardinal Alencherry made this opinion in an affidavit submitted to the Muvattu-pzha munisif court on Saturday.
The cardinal made affidavit in response to a petition filed in the court challenging the decision to sell the land of the Ernakulam-Angmaly at Kottapady near Kotham-angalam. The cardinal also submitted that the complainant is a person closely associated with dissidents in the church. He also added that the dissidents are constantly creating problems for the smooth functioning of the church.
