No central aid: B S Yediyurappa declares Rs 5 lakh to rebuild flood victims’ houses
People whose houses are partially damaged to get Rs 1 lakh as compensation.
Mangaluru: With the Centre yet to announce a full fledged relief package for the state, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa who toured the flood hit affected areas in Dakshina Kannada district on Monday, declared Rs 5 lakh as compensation for those who have lost their homes and Rs 1 lakh to those whose house were partially damaged in the rain and floods.
The Chief Minister who landed at Mangaluru International Airport Monday morning, visited flood affected areas at Kukkavu and spoke to the people.
Later, he offered prayers at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple.
While declaring the compensation, the Chief Minister also assured an amount of 10,000 to the affected people immediately.
As many of the flood victims are forced to live in rented house, he declared that Rs 5,000 would be provided as rent per month to such families.
Yediyurappa who directed the officials to take necessary steps to provide compensation and rehabilitation, warned them not to trouble the victims citing rules and regulations.
He asked the officials to provide pure drinking water and ensure that there are no health related issues.
The estimated loss in Dakshina Kannada district is about Rs 274 crore.
The Chief Minister also asked the district administration to clear the garbage mess in Pacchanady Dumping Yard in Mangaluru and shift the affected families.
Meanwhile, Congress legislators Ivan D'Souza and U.T. Khader demanded that the Chief Minister provide more compensation to the district.
