Two women from Visakhapatnam get lifer for murder
Kumari raised an alarm and later jumped into a well to save herself from the burns.
Visakhapatnam: Judge of Seventh Additional Sessions Court B. Sunitha on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to two women (mother and daughter) and three of their family members to 3-year imprisonment on charges of murdering a woman at the Thimmapuram area under S. Rayavaram police station limits in Vizag district.
According to Public Prosecutor G. Srinivas, Chevveti Kumari, 26, wife of Ch. Chanti, was preparing food in her kitchen when her mother-in-law and her daughter poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze on July 31, 2012. Kumari raised an alarm and later jumped into a well to save herself from the burns.
She was taken to a hospital where she died later. In her dying declaration, she named all the five persons who were convicted by the judge.
The S. Rayavaram police registered a case. Kumari’s mother-in-law Chevveti Simhachalam and Simhachalam’s daughter Mangeti Vasantha were given life term and slapped a fine of Rs 30,000.
Similarly, Chanti’s other two sisters Varalakshmi and Sankaram and his brother Raju were given 3-year jail term and asked to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 each.
