AG Venugopal favours Indu ruling on Sabarimala
Venugopal had earlier appeared on behalf of Travancore Devaswom Board, arguing strongly against removing the entry bar on women.
Thiruvananthapuram: Attorney General K.K. Venugopal has said Justice Indu Malhotra’s minority judgment in the Sabarimala women entry case “is more acceptable”.
He was addressing a private function hosted by a TV channel in New Delhi on Thursday. He said the judges had not anticipated women hitting the streets in protest against the 4-1 verdict, which lifted the ban on women in the 10-50 age group worshipping at the hill shrine.
“Some women even attribute the recent floods in Kerala to divine wrath”, said Mr Venugopal, referring to media reports. His comments had come in the wake of widespread protests against the verdict, which upheld constitutional morality and the primacy of right to equality over freedom of worship.
