Mananchira Square facelift to begin soon
The initial project was to renovate Manachira along with S.M Street, but technical issues caused the delay.
KOZHIKODE: The renovation works of Mananchira Square, known as the heart of the city, will begin soon under a Rs 3 crore master plan. State tourism department will spend Rs 1.70 crore and the central government's Amrith Mission Rs 80 lakh, while the city corporation will contribute the rest.
Mananchira was on the verge of ruins because of the lack of renovation.
The initial project was to renovate Manachira along with S.M Street, but technical issues caused the delay. According to U.V. Jose, the outgoing district collector, just like SM Street, it would see a considerable facelift.
Mananchira Square is the only park not just for the people here but hundreds of visitors. Amphitheatre, walkways, rain shelters, electric lights, toilet facilities and a beautified entrance are part of it.
Mayor Thottathil Raveendran inaugurated the project. Dr M.K. Muneer MLA, U.V. Jose, deputy mayor Meera Darshak, counsellor Jayashree Keerthy and architect, R.K. Ramesh were also present.
"It'll give a fresh look to Mananchira," said Mr Ramesh. Uralunkal Labor Contract Society will complete the works in four months.
