Destructive cyclone kills 7 in Chennai
Karthik died on the spot while his cousin Prem (3) and grandmother Lakshmi survived with minor injuries.
Chennai: Seven persons, including a 3-year-old and an octogenarian, were killed in incidents and several others injured by the destructive Vardah ahead of its landfall in the City on Monday.
The deceased child, identified as Karthik, was caught in the debris of a brick wall collapse triggered by a tree fall when he was asleep at his grandmother's second floor residence in Bakthavatchalam Colony, Vadapalani, during the small hours on Monday.
Karthik died on the spot while his cousin Prem (3) and grandmother Lakshmi survived with minor injuries. Prem was being treated at the Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH).
In another incident of wall collapse, a senior citizen octogenarian was killed in Nungambakkam. The deceased, identified as K Parvathi (85), was asleep at her residence when the mishap occurred. A tree branch fell on her house causing a partial wall collapse trapping her. Two other family members, Chandru and Hemavathi, injured in the accident, were being treated.
In an incident of pedestrian death reported in Rajamangalam, U. Vaikuntan (42), of Rajamangalam was crushed under a street lamp which got uprooted to a strong gust. He died before rescue could arrive.
In a similar accident involving the death of a pedestrian, Radha (75), resident of Agaram Street in Purasawalkam, was trapped under a tree which fell on her. She too died before rescue could reach her. The mishap occurred near her house.
In a fatality triggered by a hoarding fall, Hamanullah (45) of Pallikaranai, was killed after he a hoarding installed by the state came down on him near Meenambakkam, on Grand South Trunk road.
In an electrocution death, Karna Behra (24), of Odisha, a migrant worker, who was staying in a construction site in Tirupalli Street, Elephant Gate was killed, when he stepped into an electrified water puddle. A power cable to the site had snapped and fallen into the water, which the deceased had failed to notice.
A passenger who was exposed to the inclement weather suffered seizures on board an MTC route 170T bus. The deceased is identified as Mani (60), resident of Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, was on board the bus plying to Guindy from Thiru Vi Ka Nagar when the incident occurred.
