Cyclone Ockhi: Crop insurance to farmers

A total of 96 farmers got Rs 41.73 lakh towards crop insurance on Tuesday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The crop insurance scheme introduced by the LDF government has benefited the farmers who lost their crops in the recent cyclone. A total of 96 farmers from nine panchayats in  Parassala Assembly constituency got Rs 41.73 lakh towards crop insurance on Tuesday. V. Murukan, 46, of Kollayil panchayat had lost 1, 400 plantains in 97 cents on November 30. But he had taken a crop insurance of Rs 3 each for 970 plantains and received the   insurance amount of Rs 2.34 lakh from the local Parassala MLA C. K. Hareendran.

He suffered a loss of Rs 7 lakh due to the cyclone. "I am glad that I took crop insurance introduced by the LDF government," he said.   V. Saji Kumar, 45, of Kunnathukal panchayat  got Rs 18, 300 as crop insurance as  80 plantains were uprooted in the cyclone. "I have around 1,000 plantains in three areas.   I have decided to get crop insurance for my whole farming," he said.
