GHMC shelves multi-level parking at Charminar
With the Charminar pedestrian project gaining momentum after a lull, the authorities are getting into action.
Hyderabad: With the proposal to construct multi-level parking lots at Khilwat and Charminar finding no takers, the GHMC will level the properties and open them up for parking.
With the Charminar pedestrian project gaining momentum after a lull, the authorities are getting into action. To begin with, the authorities will be demolishing the complex at the Charminar bus stand.
“Till tenders are awarded, the bus stand will be used as a regular parking place. When the works begin, we will find an alternative place,” said a GHMC official.
The GHMC has similar plans for the pension office at Motigalli. The prime property is located in the midst of a big commercial market at Lad Bazaar. It is just a stone throw away distance from the historic Charminar.
The GHMC had called for tenders thrice for the Khilwat and the pension office multi-level parking complexes.
The project was to be taken up under the public-private partnership mode to provide centralised parking spaces. However, it has failed to evoke any response from developers.
The GHMC and the traffic police will utilise the available space in these two properties for parking of vehicles.
“The Charminar pedestrian project works are in full swing. We need parking space if people want to go to any shop or establishment around Charminar,” said Mr Mohammed Tajuddin Ahmed, additional DCP (traffic).
The GHMC will be demolishing the complex constructed in the Charminar bus stand to create space for parking. The TSRTC has handed over the bus stand to the GHMC. Works on cleaning the vast land at the pension office will begin and two gates will be erected at the place for entry and exit of vehicles.
“Around 300 vehicles can be parked at the pension office and another 300 at the Charminar bus stand,” said Mr Tajuddin.
