KOCHI: The Kerala Students Union (KSU) has asked the Central Government to take steps to rescue and bring ashore fishermen who are stranded in the international waters in the aftermath of Ockhi cyclone. In a statement, KSU state vice-president Rinku Padippurayi said that Sri Lanka is 198 nautical miles off Thiruvananthapuram, the shores of which were severely hit by the cyclone Ockhi.

"Karachi is 1075 nautical miles off Kerala.  The cyclone has hit at 140 km per hour and our boats and fishermen could have been drifted faraway. Chances are high of our fishermen getting trapped in neighbouring international waters. These fishermen would be imprisoned as trespassers. So it is the responsibility of the Central Government to ensure their safe return which it unfortunately is not discharging now with the Prime Minister not holding any such talks," he said.  Rinku asked the Central Government to pass the list of missing fishermen to neighbouring counties through our embassies there so that their safe return is ensured.
