HANAMKONDA: House surgeons of Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) 2016 batch have threatened to boycott duties at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital in case they are forced to vacate their hostels.

Health authorities are proposing to convert the hostel of KMC house surgeons into a Covid Isolation Centre in view of the increasing number of Coronavirus cases. The 83 interns staying in the hostel have been asked to shift to an alternate building, which they complain is cramped and can accommodate maximum 50 of them.

“The alternate place suggested is unhygienic and poorly ventilated. How can we adjust in these rooms even while putting in hard work as house surgeons at the MGM Hospital,” they asked in a statement released here.

The interns suggested that authorities could instead convert into Covid Isolation Centre alternate buildings, such as UG girls, UG boys or Lakkireddy block. Otherwise, the block where juniors stay can also be used, as currently holidays have been declared for them. In addition, there is also the REH hostel, which is closer to MGM Hospital, as well as SR block, which can be a better option for the isolation block, the house surgeons suggested.

“There are only four months left for our internship. We would like to stay in the present hostel building without any disruption till we complete our internship,” they stated; seeking justice from the college management.
