Chennai, seven other districts record 37.8 degree celcius

City temperature to increase further by month-end; humidity to be around 70-80 per cent.

Chennai: Eight districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, have started witnessing a rise in heat and the mercury soaring up to 37.8 degree Celsius  (100 degrees Fahrenheit).

Nearby districts like Vellore have touched 39 degree Celsius, while Villupuram and Madurai have reached the 40 degree C mark and are scheduled to cross it by this week. 

Temperatures in other districts like Cuddalore remained at 36 degrees C.  
According to Kea blogger Senthil Kumar, “The afternoon sea breeze across the city is not setting on time. Normally, it sets in at 2 o’ clock, but nowadays it sets in only around 4.30 pm. Hence, there is no sea breeze and so temperatures are going up, including in Chennai and other coastal areas of Villupuram, Cuddalore, Puducherry.

The interior areas have no winds and will continue to witness high temperatures, he added and said from April 14 to April 22, there might be some rain in North western part of the state. He also said from May second week some rain may occur in coastal area.

Further, former deputy director general of Meteorology Y.E.A. Raj said the interior of Tamil Nadu, which includes Madurai, Tiruchy and Coimbatore, would continue being hot and there won’t be any major rainfall. He said, “By end of April and first week of May, westerly winds will bring convectional rain and thunder showers”, he said and added that easterly wind could bring moisture content from Bay of Bengal.

Met department officials said  the temperature would remain high and generally rise. On Wednesday,  the temperature in Chennai was 36 degree Celsius. In the entire state,  the overall humidity will vary around 70 to 80 per cent.
