Chennai: Rs 930 crore allotted for stormwater drains, Rs 666 crore for road dept

Chennai: Good news for contractors associated with Chennai corporation. The corporation has sanctioned Rs 930 crore in its annual budget to construct new stormwater drains in the city now facing acute shortage of water. Similarly, roads department will get Rs 666 crore, whereas bridges and parks department had gotten a raw deal in the budget passed last month.
The city corporation which faced the wrath of civic activists for not releasing the budget details, citing model code of conduct due to RK Nagar polls has now started releasing the details on the corporation web-site.
The civic body with a deficit of Rs 102 crore will have a revenue earnings of around Rs 5,578 crore, whereas its expenditure for fiscal 2016-17 is Rs 5,680 crore. The corporation had earmarked Rs 127 crore for the electrical department and another Rs 120 crore for the building department.
In a respite to the public, the health department allocation has surged from Rs 4.31 crore to Rs 5.70 crore and similarly, the waste management of Chennai is to improve better with corporation sanctioning Rs 20.75 crore, a three hundred percent increase when compared to the previous fiscal allocation.
