More rains bring copious inflows into Kovai reservoirs
Coimbatore and its neighboring districts received a total of 312.80 mm rainfall and an average of 26.07 mm rainfall on Wednesday.
Coimbatore: Incessant rains that continue to pound the textile city, has resulted in catchment areas and dams that are located in and around the textile city to be filled to their capacity. As per rain gauge station wise rainfall report, Coimbatore and its neighboring districts received a total of 312.80 mm rainfall and an average of 26.07 mm rainfall on Wednesday.
While Chinnakallar received a maximum of 103 mm rainfall, regions like Cincona, Valparai Taluk, Nirar dam, Coimbatore South and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) received (all in mm) 72 64, 86, 3 and 3.80 of rainfall respectively.
Meanwhile, water levels in the dams also saw an improvement following these inflows. The level of water in the Siruvani dam that has a total capacity of 55.00-ft stood at 38.38-ft as on Wednesday.
With a total inflow of 17,324 cusecs of water, leaving it filled to a capacity of 97 feet against the total depth of 100 feet on Wednesday. As a precautionary measure, water from the dam was released into Bhavani river on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Aliyar dam received a total of 240 cusecs of water inflow, raising its water level to 59.40-ft, against its total level of 120-ft. The Solaiyar dam recorded 108 mm rainfall on Tuesday.
Water level in the dam stood at 114-ft against its total level of 160-ft on Wednesday.
With more rainfall predicted for the textile city, officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) are confident that the dams will continue to receive water inflows in the days to come. This hope has brought much cheer among residents and agriculturalists.
